Along with her parents and brother she survived the invasion of Nazi Germany in Czechoslovakia by moving to America in 1939. She was a trailblazer for women in Anthropology. She helped, alongside her husband discover a lost city in Peru in 1955. As a professor at Berkeley in the late 50's and 60's she taught anthropology and analyzed the pottery styles of the Ica culture of Ancient Peru.
