Diana Arbus referred to Yeager as the world?s greatest pin up photographer and the more than 30 books published about her work testify to that assessment. When she first picked up a camera in the early 1950’s cheesecake photography was considered quite taboo. She lived to see her work shown in fine art galleries worldwide. The first major museum exhibition of Yeager’s work was held in 2014 at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pa. Two documentaries about Yeager were slated for release in 2019 and a scripted TV show based on her life is in the works
Bunny Yeager is given credit for defining American feminine beauty in the 20th C. She was a beauty queen and model and was to become an entrepreneur. Learning to use a camera was an example of her drive and creativity as was her decision to master the darkroom. It surpassed paying photographers for the photos she needed to get her name known. By 1954 she had sold a "girlie" magazine a photo of Marilyn Monroe look alike Maria Stinger taken in a wildlife park. It would become their cover.
Pin-Up photography would become an art after 1954 and Bunny Yeager and Bettie Page would be at its center. First photos were sent to Hugh Hefner. No one had quite yet heard of him. He offered $100.00 for the image of Bettie Page beneath a Christmas Tree in a Santa cap at Yeager's home and she would become world famous. Yeager designed many of the costumes worn by her models and remained a relevant photographer throughout a 50 year career.. Many of these costumes and props and the photos in which they were worn or used are offered in this unique one of a kind sale. Mid-Hudson Galleries thanks Sarahjane Blum and Grapefruit Moon Gallery for their assistance in preparing for this sale.
