The Bristol Home has a deep historical background dating back to 1868. The original name for the residence was "The Home for the Friendless", and it was located at the corner of Seventh and Maryland Streets. Back then, its objective was to house and feed impoverished women until they could become independent. This property at 1500 Main Street was purchased in 1884, and by that time, then organization had transitioned to a home for the aged. In 1957, the name was changed to honor its founder, Edward Bristol, a businessman who had been shocked to find destitute women sleeping in the city jail because they had nowhere else to go. For the last 50 plus years it has been run as a non-profit adult care facility for women.
