Everything But The House is pleased to offer texts from the personal library of Zeph Stewart, longtime Harvard Classics professor and head of the Classics Department at the university. Stewart's career began in World War 2 when he served in the Army's military intelligence working on Japanese code-breaking under Edwin Reischauer. He was later transferred to Europe after the War and, during this time, began compiling many of the books in his extensive library, which includes rare and important works such as "Chotscho", a 1913 account of German expeditions to the Xinjiang region in China, 17th century editions of classics, Egyptian archaeological studies, and much more. Upon returning to Massachusetts, Stewart embarked on his tenure at Harvard, serving as an Andrew Mellon professor of the humanities and eventually as Classics Department Chair, Director of the Center for Hellenic Studies, and executive trustee of the Loeb Classical Library for more than 30 years.
